(Nasdaq: ZOOM) commented today on actiontaken by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requiring certain VoIP providers to supply 911emergency calling capabilities as reported in a press release issued today by the FCC. According to therelease the FCC said that interconnected VoIP providers must deliver all 911 calls to the customers localemergency operator as a standard feature of the service and must comply with this requirement within120 days of the FCCs order issued on May 19 2005. Zoom believes that the TelePortTMused in ZoomsX5v could meet the FCCs requirements. The FCC did not comment specifically on the TelePort butZoom believes that the TelePort is consistent with the requirements articulated by the FCC. The full textof the FCCs decision will not be released for some time and only then can it be determined whether theFCCs decision addresses the TelePort approach.The Zoom X5v is a DSL modem with builtin Voice over the Internet (VoIP) capability. The X5vsTelePort allows someone to plug in an ordinary tone phone and to use that phone to make and receivecalls as either VoIP or conventional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) calls. If someone picksup the phone and dials 911 the call automatically travels through the phone network and is handled justlike any 911 call dialed from an ordinary telephone. Unlike Zooms TelePortenabled equipment mostVoIP equipment does not have this ability. Most VoIP equipment can only be used for placing calls thattravel through the Internet as data before they are connected to the PSTN.
