Long summary:Why not knot right?Page 1 2000 Macmillan Magazines Ltdimplicated in the execution of rulelikebehaviour. In a final chapter Pinker argues that theregularirregular distinction exemplifies amore general feature of the human mind.Cognition he argues is supported by twotypes of categories classical categories (forexample odd number) and fuzzy familyresemblance categories (for example chair). The nature of the categories supporting cognition is an old chestnut in cognitive science and Pinker wants to connect the psycholinguistic research to more generalproperties of cognitive systems. Regularwords are examples of classical categorieswhereas irregular words are examples offamilyresemblance categories. Symbolcombination is crucial for the computationof regulars as well as classical categoriesmore generally; and associative memory isthe core mechanism subserving the representation of familyresemblance categoriesin general and irregulars in particular. Insofar as both classical definitional information and familyresemblance informationconstitute crucial aspects of what the mindmust deal with both mental mechanisms are integral requirements for a functioningcognitive system. For a broad audience The LanguageInstinct (Penguin 1995) was Pinkers moreamusing book and How the Mind Works(Penguin 1998) was more speculative.Words and Rules is an academic work. I verymuch like the thoroughness and clarity ofthis book notwithstanding at least oneimportant sin of omission. Pinker thoughtfully argues for abstract representation andsymbolic computation. In fact a central concern throughout is to show that one cannotget away without a highly structured linguistic computational system. SurprisinglyPinker does not raise what many linguistsand psycholinguists consider the most interesting argument for a richly structured computational system (language faculty) thatmakes use of symbolic rules. It is called thepovertyofthestimulus ar ...
