INTRODUCTION
As with my tuning datasets article, I have found that certain types of articles are
rare these days. The solution-oriented article is one of them; it pulls together a set
of technologies to provide an easier way to understand each of them, rather than
showing off the technologies. This article walks through each of these elements so
as to provide an easily modifiable and consumable example.
This article uses Visual Studio .NET 2003 Final Beta, which when this article
is published will have been released in its final form. The primary differences, as
far as this article is concerned, between VS.NET 2002 and 2003 include:
•VS.NET 2003 has the .NET Compact Framework installed, whereas it has to
be downloaded and installed for VS.NET 2002.
•VS.NET 2003 comes with the .NET Framework version 1.1, whereas
VS.NET 2002 uses the .NET Framework version 1.0. However, we are not
going to be taking advantage of any .NET Framework version 1.1-specific
features.

This article focuses on providing an example of a
.NET Compact Framework client (using the Pock-
etPC Emulator) talking to Web Services, which in
turn uses the Microsoft Application Block for Data
to talk with SQL Server behind the scenes.
