The third menu controls DPI (dots-per-inch), which determines the level of detail the scanner captures. There are many options, but here is a simple rule-of-thumb: 72 DPI : Use this if you dont plan to print out your image, i.e. for emailing pictures, a Powerpoint presentation, or any other on-screen display. 300 DPI : Normal resolution for printing. 600 DPI : Use this if you are going to print in color. 4) The fourth option should almost always be set to No Descreen . However, if you are scanning a photo (not text or drawings) out of a book, magazine, etc. you should set this option to Magazine . For newspaper photos, set it to Newspaper . 5) The fifth option is completely useless and should always be set to No Filter . 6) The last option should be set to 100% for now. You will come back and use this menu to scale your image after you have previewed it. 7) Make sure the Auto Adjustment button is checked. IT&S Scanning Guide III. PREVIEWING YOUR DOCUMENT 1) Place your material face-down on the scanner. Push at least one edge of it flush against the side of the glass to make sure it is straight. Close the lid.
