At best one Japanese nonmanga magazine sells over one million copies per issue. *Yearly sales of manga in Japan in the 1990s 600 billion yen annually (approx. $60 billion annually) *Manga account for about onequarter of all printed material sold annually in Japan. of 2500000000 yen annually. Or about 2000 yen (approx. $200) spent on manga by each Japanese citizen. *3000+ professional manga artists in Japan. *300 manga artists make an aboveaverage living from manga alone. The term manga may have been coined by the great 19thCentury Japanese woodcut artist Hokusai. The termanime is probably derived from French and English. In Chinese script manga is a compound of two characters:man = involuntary in spite of oneself morally corrupt and ga = picture or lighthearted jokes expressed inpictures. Forerunners of todays manga can be found in woodcuts from the Edo Period of the Floating World. Manga and anime are mass culture definitely not high culture. Manga are cartoons drawings and comics whileanime are movies videos and animated pictures. Anime is also called Japanimation. The model mirror of urban events in modernday Japan can be found in manga magazines which constitute the most common basic reading material for both youngsters and adults alike.
