38 Fall 2004 Industrial Contact/Internships The schools were then asked about industrial contacts for internships. Of the respondents, 12.5 percent had some kind of internships with the helicopter industry. This number is a bit misleading though, as only six out of the forty eight total respondents had internships, (five schools in the U.S. and one in Canada). The total number of internships was ten and was spread over those six educational facilities. It was encouraging that there was some kind of contact with helicopter companies in 53 percent of the U.S. schools and 40 percent of the Canadian respondents, but it was not with any equipment support. Curriculum Of the responding Part 147 schools, 75 percent cover only the minimums required by the FAA. As noted earlier, this means that helicopters are covered in just a few hours (the one line item concerning rigging). Most of the helicopter knowledge is incorporated into the training with the fixed wing information. The regulation on the curriculum of the Canadian schools was not thoroughly researched. (All the Canadian respondents did reply to the question of "only 147 requirements" and this was used as the basis of any Canadian results). Of all responding schools, only 16 percent go beyond the minimums with helicopter specific courses beyond Part 147. There were a total of eleven courses, across all educational institutions, above and beyond the minimum required by the FAA. This was usually only one other course. There was one school that far exceeded the minimums, offering an entire, specific helicopter curriculum.
