Due to increasing business challenges, BML, the No. 2 company in the clinical testing industry, wanted a system that would enable it to manage business operations more effectively and share information in real-time. In the last several years, deregulation, stronger competition and flat industry growth have required BML to make changes to stay competitive. Moreover, government regulations requiring timely disclosure of business information, and mergers and acquisitions forcing the company to consolidate its accounting systems, added to the companys decision to improve its internal operations. To address these challenges, BML decided to implement the SAP R/3 enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. Vendor Selection BML wanted a solid back-office system to support human resource and management needs. The companys specific goals for the ERP project included improving its ability to manage profit and loss, increasing the efficiency of its operations management, enabling consolidation of its accounting systems because of the various mergers and acquisitions, ensuring accurate budget management, and implementing a more reliable infrastructure for information sharing.
