Admittedly in the present federal parliament only Kim Beazley springs to mind as an example but in the past there has been a respectable rollcall from both sides in politics: Barton Deakin Menzies Evatt Hasluck Whitlam: and this list is not exhaustive. Among these figures however a further distinction can be made between those who were intellectuals in the sense of being widely read individuals of broad cultural sympathies who were at the same time pragmatic and instrumental in their approach to policymaking and Id tend to put Barton Menzies Evatt and Whitlam in that category and those who used their intellectual resources more systematically in public life. Deakins contribution to Australian policymaking a hundred years ago the use of a federated polity as an instrument for promoting innovative measures of social welfare the White Australia policy the concern for national defence integrates his reading of such exemplars as CH Pearson and James Bryce.
