Laguna Beach CAAt first glance the decidedly modern discipline of biomedical engineering doesnt seem to have anything in common with the ancient discipline of origami. But Laguna Hills artist Jenny Chen knows differently. Chen who majored in biomedical engineering at UC Irvine and who works as a technician for an optometrist is also an exhibitor at the Winter Fantasy at the Sawdust Art Festival specializing in origami and silk and rice paper painting. But while many people will marvel at her intricately folded origami ornaments and accessories few will realize the very logical framework of her aesthetically beautiful pieces. My background is biomedical engineering and theres a lot of relevance between engineering and origami because its all about geometry and symmetry and dealing with precise measurements Chen said. A lot of kids who learn origami do really well in math because you have to be able to recognize symmetry and to incorporate mathematical principles. Ive actually heard of professors figuring out complex differential equations by doing origami.
