GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
This WindUpKey has a base which replaces the fixed emblem found on the rear hatch lid
of 2002 and later VW New Beetle sedans (not convertible). This mounts with three screws
and requires disassembly of the trunk lid locking mechanism. Drilling the hatch lid is
required under the rear emblem. Tools required are:
•Screwdrivers, small flat blade and Phillips head
•5/32 or 3mm Hex Wrench
•1/4 inch drill bit
•3/8 drill bit
•Electric drill
•4-inch kitchen paring knife or similar
•Wire cutter/stripper
•Electrical terminal crimper (needle nose pliers can be used)
•Ordinary

CAUTION
DO NOT attempt to connect power to the WindUpKey while holding it in your hands. The
motor is quite strong and can pinch your fingers or cause other injury or damage. Only
power up when properly mounted to a solid surface.

INSTALL METHOD
First begin by removing the existing emblem on the trunk hatch lid. This emblem is
attached with a sticky foam or adhesive. It can be removed with the following procedure,
but go slowly and be careful so as to not scratch the hatch lid. If in doubt, see your local
VW dealer and ask them to remove the emblem.
1. Place one of the supplied cardboard pieces against the hatch lid and up tight
next to the lower edge of the emblem (Figure 1A).
2. Slide a small flat blade screwdriver in between the cardboard and under the
edge of the emblem. Slowly push the screw driver in under the emblem (Figure
