Itwas introduced in the mid1980s to provide concentrated study in the visual arts of thenineteenth twentieth and twentyfirst centuries in a multicultural and interdisciplinary context.The curriculum allows for an expansive and diverse view of historical theoretical and criticalissues relating to the visual culture of the modern era and encourages students to think out of thebox and beyond the Ivory Tower. The variety of courses offered is exceptional and includeschronological or period art history courses; the history of most media taught at the School fromprintmaking to performance; courses organized by theme (e.g. Concepts of Realism Art andPolitics Myth and Symbol in Asian Art Terrorism: a Media History Race in Art History The RoadMovie in American Cinema and Lust and Aggression in Contemporary Art); courses in theory and art criticism (e.g. theories of perception Marxism and art feminist theory intellectual history and poststructuralist criticism); and practicum courses (e.g. curatorial practice and art historicalresearch and writing).Students take advantage of a city rich in historic architecture public sculpture numerousmuseums libraries and an active gallery scene.
