Epson Stylus Photo R2400 Inkjet Printer Epsons latest wunderkind, the Stylus Photo R2400 printer (hereafter referred to simply as the R2400) brings to mind the wellknown witticism:Faster, cheaper, better . Pick any two out of three. The successor to the justifiably popular and praised Stylus Photo 2200, the R2400 is definitely faster and better. But hold on to your wallets because its priced at $850, substantially more than the 2200. So youre going to pay a premium for this printer. Should you? Yes, I think so. Its not yet the perfect pigment inkjet printer and in some ways, which Ill elaborate upon, its no better than the 2200. But in many aspects it is much better. What you get Physically the R2400 has a lot in common with the 2200 (figure 1). Its about the same size and weight. Although its boxier lines make it look considerably larger, its footprint is exactly the same (1224 inches, not counting the paper trays), and its only an inch taller. The R2400 takes roll and sheet (up to 1319 inches) paper just like the 2200. The rear sheet-feeder now handles all kinds of paper, including the special art papers that previously required hand-feeding through a slot. The feeder is improved in many small ways that make it clear that Epson paid attention to the quirks in the 2200 paper handling. Theres even a little bump plate that fits into the feeder to support papers like Epsons Enhanced Matte, so you dont have to back them up with stiff cardboard any longer. There is a front-to-back straight feed slot for printing on really heavy media, up to 1.3 mm thick. On the downside, the front catch tray is several inches shorter than on the 2200; Id rather it supported large prints more completely. Also, the automatic roll print cutter and catch basket are history. Open the printers lid and youll see a row of print cartridges that look a lot like the ones in the 2200. But theyre differentthey contain the new Ultrachrome K3 inks and theyre not interchangeable with the 2200 cartridges. Epson claims they produce more scuff-resistant prints and a better surface finish on glossy and semiglossy papers. There are also eight inks instead of seven: Epson has added a light light-black ink to the set for vastly improved monochrome printing. Otherwise its the same color set as in the 2200: two kinds of cyan, magenta, and black inks plus yellow. You still have to change the black cartridge from photo black to matte black when you switch between glossy or semi-glossy and matte papers. That brings me to the first cool thing about the R2400 printer. When you change an ink cartridge, the printer doesnt prime all eight ink channels, only the one with the new cartridge. Ive always been a little reluctant to switch between papers with the 2200 because I really hate wasting ink. The R2400 wont waste anywhere as much ink as the 2200. On the other hand, I had more problems with blocked nozzles with the R2400 than Ive had with the 2200. About one out of four or five cartridge ...
