We have a tendencyto talk about the pioneers who settled the NewWorld but in fact the pioneers actually makeup the second wave of newcomers. But beforethe pioneers can move in and survive explorersand advance scouts must set out to map the terrain to discover the resources to find new passageways.The dotcom years were really the initial daysof exploration and discovery on the internet.The first entrepreneurs were still scouting thenew terrain when a rush of pioneers arrived toset up their homesteads and most of them wereeviscerated in the dotcom implosion. They hadto make a lot of decisions in a vacuum withoutfacts without real maps of the territory. All ofthat contributed to a nave optimism that wenow know as irrational exuberance. But thenthat usually happens in the early days of a newindustry. Now the internet is on the cusp of the secondwave of innovation. Despite widespread reportsof the death of this new world the internet isstill boominggrowing rapidly generating newbusiness models and opening up new markets.The first successful pioneers have establishedthemselves at least for a while.
