A childs emotional and behaviouralproblems help predict difficulties atschool and delinquency later on.Emotional adjustment was assessedusing the Strengths and DifficultiesQuestionnaire (SDQ). This is abehavioural screening questionnaire for3 to 16yearolds and is also a wellvalidated tool for screening psychiatricdisorder. Within the normal range ofscores it taps into variations in selfregulation which may reflect theoutcomes of earlier experience. It alsohelps to predict what may happen tothe child in the future. The SDQconsists of 25 items generating anoverall score as well as scores for fivesubscales measuring: conduct;hyperactivity; emotional symptoms; peerproblems and prosocial behaviour. Theitems were assessed for all childrenvia parental report usually by themother in the computerassisted selfcompletion module. In families withtwins or triplets only one child wasassessed.For the following analysis an averagedifficulties score was computed bysumming replies to the 20 itemsindicating behavioural problemscontained in the subscales. Themaximum score if the parent said itwas certainly rather than somewhattrue that the child showed all 20problems would be 40.
