2004 Chevrolet Optra LSPage 1Head Office: CAAQuebec 444 Bouvier Street Qubec QC G2J 1E32004 CHEVROLET OPTRA LSThe Optra is a frontwheeldrive compact car from GM DAT (General Motors Daewoo Auto and Technology). It is available in sedan hatchback and new for the fall station wagon models. Similar in size to the Civic Focus Elantra and Corolla its main rivals it is powered by a 2.0litre Four. We test drove the hatchback version. Interior and trunk Getting in or out of the Optra requires flexibility on the part of anyone of medium height and over. The front seats arecomfortable but it is difficult to obtain a good driving position because of ergonomic deficiencies between the steering wheel pedals and seat. A position thats right for the legs is wrong for the arms and vice versa. Headroom and legroom are surprisingly ample in the back and the bench seat is comfortable for two adults. Both sections of the 60/40 split/fold seatback are covered in a heavy plastic that is stronger and more dirtresistant than cloth. The rear hatch opens wide to reveal averagesized cargo space. Convenience and safety The cabin is well finished and quiet. There are lots of roomy storage spaces.Instruments and controls are well laid out but only the power window control on the driversside is lighted at night. The windshield wipers do not have a real MIST mode but you can obtain a swipe of the wipers by pushing the wiper lever. The rear wiper control needs revamping too. Lever forward turns on the rear wiper; lever back turns on the windshield washers but it also turns the rear wiper off. In the Defrost/Heat position the heating system directs too much air towards and windshield and not enough to foot level. The fan is a bit weak.
